Sophie Deutsch is a news journalist at The Australian Jewish News, and became the NSW Arts Editor in 2018. She has reported extensively on topics including the experiences of marginalised groups, health and psychology, and managed a special AJN edition on disabilities in 2019.
Sophie aims to craft impactful stories that resonate with readers, spark interest, challenge perceptions, and build empathy. While striving to bring light to previously unexplored topics, Sophie also looks for fresh and innovative angles when reporting on well-publicised issues.
As the NSW arts editor, Sophie reports on developments in the arts sector and regularly interviews key figures in the industry, including authors, musicians, directors and actors, delving 'behind the scenes' to understand their unique motivations and influences. In 2020, Sophie conducted a special investigation into the experiences of women in Jewish communal organisations. Many of the findings and subsequent reporting raised the alarm about the prevalence of sexual harassment and gender-based bullying, prompting further research and community-driven action to tackle this issue.
